Looking for a great place to visit this Summer? Check out Greenwell Foundation! The Greenwell Foundation
provides outdoor educational, environmental and therapeutic programs for all ages. Located on the water inside the Greenwell State Park, the foundation offers fun Summer Camps, an Equestrian Program full of horseback rides and lessons, nature trails and so much more. In this week’s Friday Focus, we had the pleasure of hearing from Jolanda Campbell, Executive Director of Greenwell Foundation, about their new Half-Day Discovery Camp for children ages 4-6.
Q: Tell us about your organization (who you serve, what you do, etc.)
provides an inclusive community for people with and without disabilities to participate in outdoor educational, environmental and therapeutic programming inside Greenwell State Park in Hollywood, Maryland. We have programs targeting at-risk youth, outdoor nature programming for all ages (three to adult), a therapeutic equestrian program and inclusive summer camps.
New this summer is a Half-Day Discovery Camp for children ages 4-6. This camp runs from 8:30am - 1:30pm and provides our youngest campers with the opportunity to explore the natural world. Camp activities include: visiting our horses, sheep and goats at the barn, short hikes, forest games, following animal tracks, exploring muddy creeks, tie-dye, s’mores and more! Lynn, our leader for Half-Day Discovery, is an environmental scientist with a degree in wildlife management who brings both expertise and enthusiasm to our program. Half-Day Discovery campers can begin to foster a lifelong love of nature right here at Greenwell.
Q: What is your favorite “moment” (example of how your organization helped)?
We feel fortunate that we are able to provide a Half-Day Discovery camp to continue to meet the needs of the community. Our Nature Discovery Time for preschoolers has been very popular, and this camp will provide an opportunity for children to continue the same level of exploration as they become old enough to attend camp. It has been so rewarding to see young children exploring the natural environment at Greenwell away from screens and other distractions of day-to-day life.
Q: What is your biggest challenge?
One of our biggest challenges is making sure that our community knows about our new Half-Day Camp. We had an open house on June 2nd
to introduce our Camp leader and for families to see our space and learn more about the program. We are eager to spread the word to more interested families.
Q: Are there any upcoming events?
On July 7th
from 9:00am - 12:00pm we will be having Open Barn
where you and your family can come and meet our animals and explore the programs we offer. That same morning at 10:00am the St Mary’s County Library will be at Greenwell with storytime activities for children ages 2-5.
Q: How can people get involved with your organization?
A great place to start is on our website, www.greenwellfoundation.org
. If you would like to get involved, please fill out a volunteer application. We also encourage you to follow us on Instagram and/or like our Greenwell Foundation Facebook page.
