The Rappahannock United Way
strives to improve lives by mobilizing the community. Through programs focusing on education, health and financial stability, Rappahannock United Way is able to help adults, children and families achieve success. As Stacy Rounds, Community Impact Coordinator, points out “you don’t have to give an overwhelming amount of money or time” to make a difference. Check out the ways Rappahannock United Way is impacting our community, and how you can contribute, big or small in this week’s Friday Focus!
Q: Tell us about your organization (who you serve, what you do, etc.)
At Rappahannock United Way
, we help more people emerge from poverty and achieve greater financial stability in the City of Fredericksburg and the Counties of Spotsylvania, Stafford, Caroline and King George. We believe in having a community where individuals and families can achieve their potential through Education, Financial Stability and Healthy Living.
Q: What is your favorite “moment” (example of how your organization helped)?
Our favorite moments are seeing the positive impact
we have on people’s lives in our community. People like Caleb from Stafford. Caleb comes from a loving, hardworking family. He’s close to his four brothers and his mom and dad. They all live together in a local motel. Because people choose to give to Rappahannock United Way, Caleb has received help from several Rappahannock United Way Funded Programs since he was in elementary school. Tutoring, mentoring and stability helped him thrive academically. This fall he’ll head off to Albright College as part of the class of 2022 on a presidential scholarship of $25,000 a year. There are over 100 other students just like Caleb that United Way has helped graduate on time and move on to success in life through its funded education programs. It’s amazing what can happen when our community comes together to LIVE UNITED.
Q: What is your biggest challenge?
Our biggest challenge is getting more people involved. People don’t always know how easy it is to help someone right here in our own community. You don’t have to give an overwhelming amount of money or time. Getting involved
with Rappahannock United Way is simple. Click here to find out more about all the ways, big and small, anyone can do to make a difference. https://www.rappahannockunitedway.org
Q: Are there any upcoming events?
Yes! Throughout the year we have “Seasons of Service
.” This spring we’re focusing on Education and getting children prepared for kindergarten. Did you know 61% of lower income children have no children’s books at home? You can help us change that!
Q: How can people get involved with your organization?
We need your help to create literacy kits for local kids! Rappahannock United Way is collecting new, age-appropriate books for four and five-year-old students to build literacy kits for young children in our community. Literacy and early learning are critical to ensuring children are ready for kindergarten and reading at grade level by third grade. Help local students reach these important milestones by donating books or hosting a book drive of your own.
