1. STUDENT LOAN FORGIVENESS SCAMS
Scammers may contact you via phone or create phony application sites aimed at stealing your SSN or bank account. They may use pressure or create urgent messages that encourage you to apply before it's too late, charging an application fee. It costs nothing to apply for student loan forgiveness. Go directly to the Department of Education website for information about applying for forgiveness.
2. CRYPTOCURRENCY SCAMS
Cryptocurrency scams typically involve fake prizes, contests, giveaways or early investment opportunities. Scammers may impersonate celebrities or popular websites to get people to send money or share login information. Be mindful of who you are sending money to.
3. ROMANCE SCAMS
Scammers often steal someone's identity or create fake profiles on dating and social media apps to meet victims. Many scammers will use stock photos or make excuses why they can't meet in person. They'll ask for money, or if you can buy them something after gaining your trust.
4. ONLINE PURCHASE SCAMS
This type of scam is that you purchase a product or service that's never delivered. Items are often sold on marketplace websites or social media. Paying with a credit card can help limit potential losses, as you can initiate a chargeback if you don't receive the product.
5. EMPLOYMENT SCAMS
Employment scams tend to target people who have been out of work a while. Be sure to verify employment opportunities before sending personal information, money, etc.
