Area museum credits community for its success.

Community nonprofits answer an important calling to enrich, educate, nurture, and improve the lives of those they serve. But like any local business, there are finances to be managed, goals to be met, a mission to stay true to, and partnerships to be forged. Getting all that right can lead to great success—which means more goodness to go around.

The Fredericksburg Area Museum (FAM) is one such organization. Established in 1988 as a 501(c)(3) in Fredericksburg’s historic Town Hall (circa 1816), the museum is committed to sharing the stories of the region’s culture and history—while strengthening community through an exploration of its diversity. The museum maintains a collection of over 3,000 objects that span 10,000 years, ranging from Native American artifacts to Black Lives Matter posters.

“Our goal is to help our community gain an understanding of our differences so we can all work together to forge a better community,” says Sara Poore, president and CEO of FAM. “I am very proud of what we do to serve our region.”

A financial anchor

As a nonprofit, financial support and guidance is vital to the museum’s success. It’s why they chose to partner with Community Bank of the Chesapeake for their banking needs.

“The FAM loves working with Community Bank of the Chesapeake,” Poore said. “The staff is tremendously helpful and responds quickly to any needs we might have. During the COVID-19 pandemic crisis, the bank was amazingly responsive to help nonprofits get the financial support needed to continue our missions.”

A cause you believe in

It’s easier to carry out a mission when others believe in what you do, too. The FAM hosts several events and gatherings every year, such as Sounds of Summer, which allow the community to come together as one and celebrate its differences through music.

The concert series has been instrumental in recognizing the area’s talented performing artists, celebrating the diversity of a shared musical past in many genres, and aiding in the economic vitality of historic downtown Fredericksburg.

“Sounds of Summer is a showcase for local and regional musicians, allowing musicians to pursue their art form publicly while bringing together a sense of unity and identity among the audience,” Poore said.
